Water Trade in Australia

Water allocation trade in the Murray-Darling Basin lets irrigators buy and sell seasonal water rights without transferring the underlying entitlement. Integra brokers settle trades across all MDB zones — from Zone 1A in the Greater Goulburn to Zone 7 in the Victorian Murray below the Barmah Choke.

What is water trading?

Water trading separates the seasonal use of water from long-term ownership. When you hold a water entitlement (licence), each season you receive an allocation — a percentage of your entitlement volume based on dam storage and seasonal conditions. You can trade that allocation to another irrigator without selling the licence itself.

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) oversees the framework. Each state — Victoria, NSW, and South Australia — administers trades through its own water register. Victoria uses the Victorian Water Register, NSW uses WaterNSW, and South Australia uses the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).

Prices vary by zone, season, and supply conditions. A licensed water broker like Integra can access the full market — buyers and sellers across all zones — to help you get the best outcome. Learn more in our guide to how water trading works.

Why use Integra to trade water?

Water markets are opaque. There is no public exchange, and prices can vary by $30 to $80 per megalitre between zones depending on IVT status, timing, and who you know. Integra has traded in the MDB for over a decade and maintains active buyer and seller networks across Victoria, NSW, and SA.

Our brokers match your trade at the right time — not just any time. We understand seasonal timing, carryover deadlines, and IVT limits that affect whether a trade is even possible. You can learn how pricing works in our pricing guide or call us directly for a current market read.
